1. Which project did you have the most personal connection with this year? Why?
Even though this may be a pretty common answer I feel like I had a very personal connection to the Socialization Project. It was a very personal project for most people because it was a way to reflect on deeper level and at least for me it allowed me to identify the fake elements of my personality.
(pull up socialization essay on DP)
2. What have you learned (skill, lesson, or knowledge) this year that will be most helpful for you in the future?
This year especially I was able to add evidence that fit the criteria best. In the past I either skipped evidence all together or I put something in totally unrelated to the rest of the product and slapped some quotation marks and called it good. Throughout this year I was able to analyze my entire project and research good evidence which made everything ten times better in the long run.
(final humanities essay rubric) -was able to provide adequate evidence resulting in a good grade which I would have been able to do previously
3. What project or projects have you done this year that have inspired you to want to learn more? Explain how you were inspired.
In the beginning of the year we did a small project on happiness, we ended up watching a documentary and answering some questions. I found the concepts introduced in this project very intriguing and made me want to learn more about being happy instead of faking it all the time. It became very personal and got to me on a deeper level.
(we didn’t have a physical assignment so anecdotal evidence)
4. How has your attitude toward learning changed this year?
In my previous experiences with school everything we did seemed pointless and I never had a good outlook on school because I never saw the relevance to my learning. This year teachers tried very hard to make everything we learned relatable to the real world. Sometimes this worked and other times it seemed pretty ridiculous how they made a connection between some elements and my life. But overall it ended up making a much larger impact on my learning.
(math: polynomial project, we got to draw out a picture then make equations off of it. I dont have the actual project but ya)
5. What connections have you made this year between what you have learned in your classes and your own personal experiences outside of school?
Honestly I have made very little connections to my outside life and what we do in school. But I know that these skills will be helpful someday but I definitely haven’t found it yet. It seems like someday it will be useful but in my life right now it is not very relevant. So yeah… im gonna be completely honest.
(id say the most relevant would be the digital arts video project because it gave me so many new skills that I found very fun and might want to do again)
6. How have your learning and experiences at AHS this year changed the way you see the world?
My experience at AHS has changed the way I see the world by changing my outlook on school. Before it was just a boring place that would be over soon that I just had to suck up and go to. I am actually really sad to see this year because it was so much fun. It changed the way I see all work in general.
(for math: encyclopedia project, before I would have hated this but I changed my attitude)
7. What work from this year would you like to look back on and remember when you are a graduating senior?
I think I will definitely remember the Shakespeare Project because it was so unique to anything I have ever experienced. It was really cool to be able to act out a play for a class activity and then be able to tie it into an academic process.
(I tried to put the play on my DP but it didn’t work out to well so heres my essay instead)
You as a Student and a Learner (Your Work and Your Work Habits):
1. What is the most important change that you have made as a learner this year?
This year as a learner I have actually developed the ability to prioritize my work. SOmetimes I can’t get everything done and I use to just get super stressed out and now i’ve learned to just do the most important first just incase I run out of time.
(math: semester 1 exam, decided to do exam first and finish that and then do reflection which is why its so short)
2. How have you taken an active role in your education this year?
I have taken a very active approach to my education by doing everything in my power to advocate in certain situations.
(math: emailed Christie and told her there was absolutely no way I would finish everything and got an extension on 3 assignments)
3. What piece of work that you’ve done this year are you proudest of? Why?
I am most proud of our video project (pull up on DP) we worked really hard and brought in different green screening concepts and in the end I am really proud of the finished product.
4. If you could go back and refine one piece of work this year, what piece of work would you refine and how would you refine it?
I would refine my water filter project (pull it up on DP) cause lets be real it's not the most beautiful thing we've ever seen. But ya I would go back and not have a gaping hole in the top and maybe add something to the bottom so you dont have to detach the bottom just to drink out of it.
5. If you were the teacher, what comments would your teacher make about your work habits?
ha, lets be real I am a lazy procrastinator. For example (final humanities essay I did it ALL the night before, yup lazy and a definite procrastinator.
6. What might you want next year’s teacher to know about your work habits?
Ha, that I am a lazy procrastinator and need a little push to be able to fly out of the nest, so to speak.
(final humanities essay)
7. What is the most difficult thing you have done this year? Why was it difficult, and how did you deal with that difficulty?
The most difficult thing I have done this year was definitely the Final Humanities Essay because I really didn't know what I was talking about and was just puttin down some words hoping that they made sense. After I was done with the project I was actually surprised how well I was able to cover up my lack of knowledge on the topic.
8. How has group collaboration helped you as a student?
Before this year I definitely preferred working alone but his year I have made so many awesome friends with so many new people because of my ability to collaborate. And now that I have this positivity towards groups it helps me share my ideas comfortably.
(Video project)
Reflecting on Yourself and Our Model of Education
(Project Based Learning and our Student Culture)
1. What would you say to an incoming 9th grader about how to succeed in project based learning?
To succeed in project based learning you MUST not procrastinate. I know its hard but doing an entire project that you were supposed to be working on for weeks, in one night is stressFULL. So at least do it two nights before if procrastination is something that you do very well.
(final humanities essay)
2. How have any of the habits of heart and mind helped you be successful as a student or person?
Definitely gaining the skill to collaborate has helped me become more comfortable sharing my ideas and perspectives about a project or really anything in life. This skill will definitely help me in the future as well because pretty much every job has some type of collaboration to it.
(video project)
3. How has a relationship with a faculty member helped you be more successful in school this year?
This year I have made friends with so many teachers and not just a type of friendship where we say hi in the halls like a real connection where I feel like I can trust them, ya know? To the point where if anything at all was going on I could email them or even talk to them during class and they would help me through anything. I felt like I could honestly do this with all my teachers which is awesome!
(math: asked for an extension)
4. How has the work in Advisory helped you grow or change as a student, as a friend, and as a citizen?
Im going to be totally honest when I say that Advisory, for me has been a waste of time. I know thats harsh but really we just sit in a circle and talk about our weekend and the occasional time that we do something it has no relevance to my life so I hate to say it but nothing?
5. Project based learning is a different model than traditional models of education. Explain how Project based learning has influenced your learning and your production of work.
I am definitely a hands on learner and in previous school I just didn't feel that real word connection like I do here. This makes me more motivated to learn and able to carry on the skills I learn way part school.
(Avalanche project)
