Graphic Novel Project:
|
Our task in this project was to recreate a scene from the book Brave New World in a graphic novel form. Most students were paired into teams of authors and artists, though several worked alone and handled both aspects of the task. The authors wrote a paper analyzing one of the main characters in the novel and used noun-phrase apposites and concessive theses to make their arguments. Artists focused on key choices of moment, frame, image, word, and flow in creating a graphic novel about the chosen scene. Our exhibition featured both an art show of our graphic novels, and a seminar discussion about Brave New World. |
Artist Self-Assessment:
The most challenging part of creating this graphic novel was trying to make every aspect of the scene fit into the five pages we were allowed. To overcome this challenge I managed to create some metaphorical panels that told most of the story through the characters actions. For example, in the last panel I put Lenina sitting on the floor but the way that she is sitting and her expression shows her fear and sadness without words or multiple panels. In my graphic novel there are not a lot of panels but the message that is put across is worth 1,000 words. At first I thought the entire scene couldn’t be depicted in five pages but with a little creativity I was able to minimize unnecessary panels.
My favorite panel in the graphic novel is definitely the second page, first panel. I believe this panel really shows the dramatic ceremony and how out of place Bernard and Lenina are in this society. I made both Lenina and Bernard from behind showing their perspective just like you were looking though their eyes. Throughout the entire graphic novel I made Bernard and Lenina black and white to show their difference coming from a different society. The fire I made orange to show its power. I really like the emphasis and power this panel has because of its high contrast.
Over the extent of this project I think I most proud of the drawings of the people in the graphic novel. Usually I have a very hard time with people but I was able to overcome that irrational fear and learned a lot about my drawing limits. I didn’t expect this project to be such a long project but in the end I was glad it was. I learned so much about quality work and its impact on the outcome of the project. Usual I just coast through projects and don’t really connect to the end result but I really enjoyed this project and its creative aspect. It was very interesting to see all the different products of work from different people. Overall I really learned a lot though this project and really enjoyed it.
